242. Following a Cabinet meeting last night, Acting President agreed to follow government to Canton (see mytel 27 [217], January 26, noon71). Apparently he had not approved of Government’s decision move capital and had made no decision about his own future movements.

Conclusive argument which finally convinced him was Communists were relentlessly marching against Nanking and that if he were taken prisoner his usefulness would be ended.

Only 40 officials left in Foreign Office today. Vice Minister Tung Lin leaving tomorrow. He reports Foreign Minister will give reception for Diplomatic Corps Canton February 5.
