Editorial Note

In a statement issued to the press on October 4, 1949, the Department of State announced that as of October 3 the political, economic, and international organization work of the Department had been re [Page 434] organized. This reorganization involved the establishment of several new bureaus including the Bureau of Near Eastern, South Asian, and African Affairs under the supervision of George C. McGhee, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern, South Asian, and African Affairs. Raymond A. Hare was designated Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern, South Asian, and African Affairs. Included in the new Bureau was the Office of Greek, Turkish, and Iranian Affairs (GTI) under the supervision of the following officers: Director, John D. Jernegan; Deputy Director, William M. Rountree; Officer in Charge of Greek Affairs, Leonard J. Cromie; Officer in Charge of Turkish Affairs, C. Robert Moore; Officer in Charge of Iranian Affairs, C. Vaughan Ferguson.
