The Ambassador in the United Kingdom (Douglas) to the Secretary of State

2789. Rumbold¹ informed us Foreign Office instructed British Ambassador Athens to urge upon Greek Government that it endeavor to avoid further Yugoslav frontier incidents. He indicated that this was result of Bevin’s concern this regard and British desire that “in long run Greek and Yugoslav Government get on.” According Rumbold Pipinelis assured British Ambassador Greeks would endeavor prevent further incidents.

Rumbold said Foreign Office has now also instructed British Ambassador Belgrade to urge Yugoslavs on appropriate occasion not to exaggerate Greek-Yugoslav frontier incidents but to discuss such matters with Greeks along lines of meeting re Skočiver incident.²
