The Minister in Hungary ( Schoenfeld ) to the Secretary of State

secret

609. President Tildy1 told me April 12 he hoped US would ratify peace treaty with Hungary as soon as possible since each month’s delay costs Hungarian Govt 50 million forint for outlays that will fall away with ratification, this amount being ten times deficit for all other treasury purposes. He pointed out British ratification was already authorized and presumed Soviet ratification will take place more or less simultaneously with ours as had been the case when renewal of diplomatic relations was decided on in 1945.

  1. Zoltan Tildy, President of Hungary since February 1, 1946.
