25. According to a press item published yesterday, the Sino-American Executive Headquarters in Peiping in its sixth joint communique January 28 announced it had been informed by its field team at Tatung that all fighting had ceased in northern Shansi, western Hopei, and [Page 392] parts of southeastern Suiyuan and southern Chahar. Sent Chungking as 20; repeated to Department as 25, January 30. Various Chinese circles here are expressing more optimism over probable success of the executive headquarters than heretofore.
