210. Van Mook met Sjahrir late yesterday and gave him protocol containing Netherlands’ final word of offer. I have not seen the document but know that one item is to effect Soekarno is unacceptable to Netherlands Government in every way. Hope obtain copy of document near future.74 Sjahrir in depressed mood, said he would proceed [Page 822] Djokjakarta today or tomorrow. He told Van Mook he might have to resign. If he does resign, such would leave rabid extremists in charge Indonesian movement and probably end all hopes of peaceful agreement.
