The Secretary of State to the United States Political Adviser for Austrian Affairs (Erhardt)

289. Dept recommends that you support efforts of Austrian Govt to apply provisions of law of April 3, 1919. You may in your discretion inform French representative that US does not support restoration of monarchy in Austria and has agreed to political activity only by three major parties now represented in Govt. Dept agrees that injection of this issue into political campaign is not desirable under any circumstances and recommends that if matter is not settled before elections you may desire to bring matter to attention of Austrian Govt and Council making public statement of US policy on monarchy contained in PWC 218 “Treatment of Austria”.8
