178.68 “I am instructed by the Secretary of State to inform you that (1) The American Government has carefully studied the Irish Government’s aide-mémoire dated October 9, 194469 in reply to the request of the American Government for assurances as to Axis war criminals embodied in our aide-mémoire dated September 21, 1944;70 (2) The American Government notes that the Irish Government does not vouchsafe the assurances requested and regrets that the Irish Government does not choose to exercise its sovereignty in unequivocal and sympathetic cooperation with the United Nations in proclaiming denial of asylum to Axis war criminals responsible for the horrors that have shocked the civilized world.”
