The Department of State to the British Embassy

Memorandum

The Department of State refers to an aide-mémoire dated November 28, 1944, Reference: 152/221/44, from the British Embassy concerning the interrogation of a captured member of the S.S. Deathshead Division who was taken into custody in France.

The American Government is of the opinion that until information received from the prisoner has been evaluated, no interrogation should be made except by British and American officers under the direction of the Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Forces. The prisoner was captured by the First American Army and it is believed to be in the best interests of the United States not to permit interrogation of him at this time by Polish or Soviet officers.

A message has been dispatched to Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Forces, requesting interrogation of this prisoner within the theater in accordance with the above decision.
