The Minister in Switzerland (Harrison) to the Secretary of State

3245. American Interests Germany. Department’s A–45, February 7. Swiss note May 15 states that according letter April 21 from Swiss Legation, Berlin, German authorities appear recently to have taken up passports those internees not considered Aryan. This does not involve withdrawal as such but a control measure because passports are returned to bearers after verification their identity and nationality. When interested persons unable furnish sufficient proof of nationality it may be assumed they are transferred special Jewish camps.

Thus far Swiss Legation, Berlin, has knowledge no case where American passport not returned to bearer after control. Appears German authorities more particularly interested in bearers Palestinian and certain Latin American passports.

Swiss promise such supplementary information as may be obtained.
