2322. Personal for the Secretary. Entirely reliable American source known to Lyon43 informs me that Dr. Kleist,44 a special representative of Ribbentrop, is now in Stockholm trying to contact Allied officials with peace offer and is already in touch with an old Polish friend designing to use him as contact man. Informant is not certain [Page 526] but believes it probable contact was made by Kleist through the Pole with British last night or will be today.
