The Ambassador in the Soviet Union (Standley) to the Secretary of State

120. Ankara’s 286, April 17, 4 [7] p.m. and other related telegrams. While I am unaware of the nature of recent Soviet broadcasts regarding the Ankara bombing trial, the tone of the Soviet press on this subject would hardly appear to have warranted the withdrawal of the Turkish Ambassador or Saraçoğlu’s reference to an “outburst”. A survey of the press both here and in Kuibyshev fails to disclose any serious campaign against either the trial or Turkey in general, although articles and despatches of critical nature have appeared.

Repeated to Ankara.
