Memorandum of Conversation, by the Acting Secretary of State
[Washington,] March 23, 1942.
The British Ambassador called to see me this evening at my request. The Ambassador again brought up the question of our recognition of the independence of Syria. I replied that I preferred to leave this matter in continued abeyance for the time being. I said that until we knew clearly what our situation with the Vichy Government was, I saw nothing to be gained by raising this new obstacle. The Ambassador said that he understood our position and acquiesced.
