The Minister in Egypt (Kirk) to the Secretary of State

198. My 197, February 4, 7 p.m. Following the surrounding of the Palace by British troops the British Ambassador accompanied by the general officer commanding British troops in Egypt and a strong escort called at the Palace at 9 o’clock tonight and after delivering a prepared statement presented a letter of abdication for the King’s signature. The King thereupon made a plea for leniency and immediately called in Nahas Pasha to form a new government. At present writing Nahas is in conference with the British Ambassador and it is not yet known what type of government he intends forming.
