3975. Personal for the Secretary. Your message number 3272, July 15, 9 p.m. After making inquiry, I have decided it best to take this matter up with Mr. Eden which I shall do on Monday. General Spears was Mr. Churchill’s military contact officer with the French during the time when Mr. Churchill was Prime Minister and the French nation was still engaged on the European front. He is also an old personal friend. Because of other matters that are under consideration here at this time, I hope you will give me a little time to try to work out a satisfactory solution.
