187. My 183, February 1, 6 p.m. It is reported but not yet officially announced that the Prime Minister tendered his resignation shortly after noon today following which the King received the British Ambassador on the latter’s urgent demand. Latest indications were that the Ambassador would probably support the return of the Wafd in preference to the formation of another weak coalition excluding the Wafd and in order to forestall the nomination of a Palace–Aly Maher candidate.
