740.00112 European War 1939/4621

The Chief of the Division of Near Eastern Affairs (Murray) to the Chargé at Tangier (Childs)

Dear Rives: Paraphrases of your telegrams no. 4 of January 5 and no. 10 of January 7, 1942, were transmitted to the Secretary of War under cover of a communication from the Department, in which the views of the War Department were requested in order that appropriate study might be given to the matter under review.

The Secretary of War has replied to the effect that it is felt that all possible means and every occasion should be taken to cultivate the friendship and good will of the person to whom reference was made in your telegrams. It was added that any contacts which may create a basis of rapprochement between the Spanish civil and military authorities and ourselves that might be of value and aid in a military way in the future should be furthered at this time.

Sincerely yours,

Wallace Murray
