The Acting Secretary of State to the Minister in Iran (Dreyfus)

57. Your 51, February 28, 12 a.m. and 54, March 3, noon.82 As soon as possible after the formation of a new cabinet it is requested that you see the Prime Minister and discuss with him courteously but firmly the question of the continued presence in Iran of Japanese diplomatic and consular representatives. In that discussion you should point out that the presence of these officials is a grave danger not only to the interests of the United States and its associates in the war against aggression but also to Iran itself. In this latter connection you should stress the fact that fifth column activities of Japanese officials have played an important part in subjugating those countries in Asia which Japan has temporarily overrun. Accordingly you should express the strong conviction of this Government that the best interests of Iran require the prompt severance of relations with Japan.

Please keep me promptly informed of developments in this matter.
