The Secretary of State to the Ambassador in the Soviet Union ( Standley )

166. Your 544, June 18, noon. We took advantage of Molotov’s presence here in order to impress upon him on several occasions how important it is to the common cause that military supplies be allowed to pass in transit through the Soviet Union to China. Although Molotov listened with interest to the remarks made to him on this subject he did not commit the Soviet Government in any way. He promised, however, to discuss the matter with Stalin.13
