3. General Chiang Kai-shek informed me on January 29th that he had placed Yu Pei-feng, who has had much experience in communications activities, in charge of transport activities on the Burma Road as from February 1, and he expressed the conviction that the amount of traffic along the Burma route, which has been disappointingly little during recent months, would show rapid improvement. I am also reliably informed that T. L. Soong has been relieved of the directorship of the Southwest Transportation Company, having been replaced by an engineer named Ching.
