The Ambassador in Japan (Grew) to the Secretary of State

912. The following statement was issued this evening in the name of the President of the Cabinet Information Board:

“It is a source of profound gratification on the part of the Japanese Government that the Governments of Germany, Italy, Rumania, Slovakia and Croatia have accorded recognition to the National Government of the Republic of China.9 Since their establishment on March 30 of last year, the new National Government have steadily grown in strength. By the basic Treaty concluded between Japan and China on November 30 of last year,10 Japan took the initiative in recognizing that Government and have since been extending utmost aid towards the efforts of that Government which have been exerting themselves to attain the objective of co-existence, co-prosperity and reconstruction of East Asia. The fact that the German, Italian, Rumanian, Slovakian and Croatian Governments have recognized the National Government is a telling blow to those who, having not yet realized the great ideal of the establishment of the East Asia New Order, still continue the folly of resistance against Japan. With the recognition as a turning point, we believe, the establishment of a New World Order will make a great step forward.”11
