727. Batavia’s telegram 51, May 23, 2 p.m. to the Department. On May 22 Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs spoke to my Netherlands colleague about supplies of rubber and tin and in the course of this interview Mr. Ohashi said that owing to the stiffening attitude of the Netherlands authorities a stage was approaching at which the Japanese Government must consider the recall of Mr. Yoshizawa and might be compelled to take further steps which they strongly dislike to take.11
