102. Your 192, June 5.⁹ Sheik Taj-ed-Din’s proposal has been given attentive consideration. Although the American Government continues to maintain its established policy of favoring the independence of Syria, provision for which was made in the Syrian Mandate incorporated in the treaty of 1924 between the United States and France, the Department does not consider that it would be desirable for the American Government to issue a statement on the subject at this particular time.
