Memorandum of Telephone Conversation, by the Assistant Secretary of State (Long)
I called Sir Ronald Campbell on the telephone. He said he had not received from his Government a reply to the question about the search and other details. I suggested to him that I would like to proceed with the negotiations and broach the matter to the German Embassy and Italian Embassy.
After discussion of the matter, and an explanation of my reason, a part of which was the imminence of some court proceedings to free some of the Italians from confinement, Sir Ronald readily agreed that I do not wait for the reply from the British but that I proceed with the other Governments in a general way.
