The Secretary of State to the Ambassador in the United Kingdom (Winant)

506. Your 3907, November 29.2 In reference to various requests made to the Embassy by prominent persons and others for its intercession with the British authorities to obtain priority for Americans on the British planes to Lisbon you are informed that to avoid discrimination in view of the fact that a number of Americans in the British Isles desire to use this means of returning to the United States the Department desires the Embassy to request priority only in the case of American officials or others traveling in connection with matters of interest to this Government and in the case of proved serious illness necessitating the prompt evacuation of the individual concerned from the British Isles.

The Department will so inform all persons seeking its intercession to obtain such priority and the Embassy should similarly reply to any such requests received by it.
