The Ambassador in the Soviet Union (Steinhardt) to the Secretary of State

418. Pravda this morning publishes the first report which has appeared in the Soviet press of the entrance of German troops into Bulgaria. The announcement is not prominently headlined, is very brief, and there is no Soviet comment. It takes the form of a Tass item from Berlin dated March 2 as follows:

“The DNB56 reports from Sofia that German troops have entered the territory of Bulgaria with the consent of the Bulgarian Government.”
