The Ambassador in the Soviet Union (Steinhardt) to the Secretary of State

1576. My 1520, August 16, 6 p.m. General Anders told me yesterday that he has already succeeded in organizing 2 divisions of Poles and that he expects to be able to organize 2 more in the near future and ultimately to raise the total number to 6.

He said the Soviet authorities are providing the arms for the 2 divisions already organized including field artillery, but neither tanks nor airplanes, but had informed him that it would be necessary for him to obtain all of the arms for any additional troops from Great Britain or the United States. The General added that he had received assurances from the British that uniforms for 50,000 men would be forthcoming as soon as possible.
