The Minister in Finland (Schoenfeld) to the Secretary of State

613. An exchange of telegrams between Hitler and Ryti is published in the Finnish press this morning. Hitler is reported to have telegraphed to the President: [Page 110]

“In consequence of Finland’s recent adherence to the pact against Communist International, I beg to express my heartfelt wishes for the happiness and success of Your Excellency and the Finnish nation as a whole.”

In the Finnish press President Ryti’s telegram to Hitler is reported as follows:

“For the cordial telegram which Your Excellency sent me in consequence of Finland’s adherence to the Anti-Comintern Pact, the object of which is to deliver all peoples from Communist menace, I wish hereby on behalf of myself and of the Finnish people to express my sincere thanks and to extend at the same time my warmest wishes for the happiness and success of the heroic German people.”

However, the text of the latter message in the suspended language papers is slightly different:

“… I wish to express on behalf of myself and the Finnish people my sincere gratitude and at the same time to present my warmest felicitations to Your Excellency and the heroic German people and to wish it happiness and success.”
