511. Announcement of British restrictions on canned fruit resulted in widespread distorted press comment. For your information, the British Embassy and Ashton-Gwatkin are disturbed by the reaction [Page 109] and telegraphed London on Saturday, strongly advising against the issuance of any other such dramatic announcement. The effects of such restrictions are extremely serious in themselves. Moreover, the manner in which they have been announced has given rise to misinterpretations and unnecessary misunderstandings which the British themselves, in their own interest, should seek to avoid.
