The Chargé in Italy ( Reed ) to the Secretary of State

Rome , October 29, 1940—noon.

1033. The outbreak of hostilities with Greece has not yet been announced to the Italian people either in the press or on the radio. This morning’s press however carries the text of the Italian ultimatum and editorials declare that any resistance on the part of Greece will be overcome by the Italian Armed Forces.
