The Minister in Egypt (Fish) to the Secretary of State

186. Following a Cabinet meeting yesterday the Prime Minister made a statement to the press denying the report published in the morning papers regarding the resignation of the Cabinet, adding that the situation remained unchanged and that the Cabinet was remaining in office. However, the Legation is reliably informed that the Cabinet did in fact submit its resignation in writing to the King day before yesterday in a move designed to obtain Wafd support by removing Nokrashy Pasha from the Ministry of the Interior and by possibly even going so far as to eliminate all Saadists from the Cabinet but the British Embassy, which has recently been working in close cooperation with Dr. Ahmed Maher, President of the Saadist Party, is said to have intervened at the last moment and prevailed upon the Prime Minister to remain in office. Situation is still regarded as unsettled and either the reshuffling of the present Cabinet or the formation of a new Cabinet seems likely.
