The Ambassador in Japan (Grew) to the Secretary of State
[Received July 28—7:27 a.m.]
163. Department’s 94, July 16, 6 p.m., and previous telegrams. Counselor60 called on Vice Foreign Minister61 at latter’s request to discuss questions the Ambassador had broached to Foreign Minister, One concerned proposed visit of Alden to Mandated Islands. This was the only opportunity to discuss the matter since the Ambassador’s visit of July 8.
Vice Minister said Ambassador’s suggestion was referred to Overseas Ministry but that no reply had been received. He said that probably other Government departments would be consulted. In answer to Counselor’s query he feared that there was no way of expediting reply to Foreign Office.
His manner though friendly indicated that the Foreign Office was unable to do anything further.
