The Acting Secretary of State to the Ambassador in China (Johnson)

157. Your 309, June 18, 2 p.m., and previous. As it would appear that the proposed “Chinese Vegetable Oil Company Limited” contemplates monopoly control of the wood oil trade in which American interests are largely concerned, the Department notes with approval the intention of the Embassy to file written protest with the Chinese Government. Department desires that this matter be pursued energetically and suggests that, as other foreign interests in addition to American interests would in all probability be affected adversely by the creation of such a monopoly, your concerned colleagues may also wish to lodge formal protest with the appropriate Chinese authorities.
