- Foreign Office has telephoned that, in accordance with this office’s suggestion and as reported in the press, General Yen Hsi Shan presumably on April 1 sent a plane over Hungtung and Linfen which dropped messages arranging a signal code with result that the missionaries in those two towns signaled that they are safe and well. A telegram received from Yen in this connection stated that Government [Page 516] troops were “relieving the siege” of Hungtung and Linfen and expected shortly to occupy both places.
