Your 110, May 21, 10 a.m. Referring to the statement of the Foreign Office spokesman reported in the above-mentioned telegram, the Department suggests that the Embassy orally and informally and at an opportune moment inquire of the Japanese Foreign Office as to the present status of the matter with a view to ascertaining the names of the officials who are to make the investigation and the date of their departure from Japan. In the event the matter is under way and the officials have departed from Japan, it is suggested that the Embassy in its discretion reaffirm the continued interest of this Government in the smuggling situation and indicate that the Embassy and Department would welcome information in regard to the findings and results of the investigation.
