The Secretary of State to the Ambassador in Argentina (Weddell)
127. For Dawson. Your 215, September 21, 6 p.m. We have informally inquired of two Justices of the Supreme Court, who are the only ones we have so far been able to get in touch with, and they, while expressing their appreciation of the honor which would be conferred upon them by an invitation to serve on the commission, and their desire to do anything possible to be of assistance in inter-American [Page 148] relations, have stated that, owing to the magnitude of the tasks before the Supreme Court over the next few months, they greatly regret that it would be impossible for them to devote the necessary time to the work of the commission.
While, as stated, it has been possible to get in touch with only two members of the Court, we are inclined to feel that the reaction from the other members would probably be much the same; you will, of course, appreciate that the Supreme Court will have before it in the next few months an unusually large and important number of cases for decision.
