157. Legation’s 155, April 16, 10 a.m. [p.m.].89 Following from Consul General at Hankow:

“April 17, noon. Letter Chengtu April 13 states 29th Szechuan Army ran away and Reds have obtained supplies, guns and ammunition hence their present push. At that time did not believe evacuation Chengtu would be necessary. Two messages from Palos dated April 16th which Legation doubtless received state inter alia Chengtu British [and] American missionaries starting preliminary evacuation [Page 681] women children toward Tzechow and Chungking. Ford plane going Chengtu 17th assist evacuation.”
