The Consul General at Canton (Spiker) to the Secretary of State

Referring to my telegram of March 3, 6 p.m.,89 telegram from Kweiyang reports Tsunyi now taken by Communists, combined Northern and Kweichow forces falling back to take defensive positions on south bank of Wu River, after disastrous defeat of five brigades between Tsunyi and Meitan. Government leaders in Kweichow broadcasting appeals for immediate reenforcements to enable them to hold present positions. Kweiyang defences being strengthened. I have again telegraphed American missionaries in that city and Kiensi to exercise every precaution. Sent to the Department, repeated to the Legation, Nanking and Hankow as well as my March 3, 6 p.m.
