The Secretary of State to the Swiss Chargé (Micheli)

The Secretary of State presents his compliments to the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of Switzerland and has the honor to refer to his note of September 11, 1935, in regard to the question of the possible extension beyond October 1, 1935, of the time during which the customs duties proclaimed in connection with the trade agreements with Belgium, Haiti and Sweden will be applied to products originating in Switzerland or Liechtenstein. This question has been considered most carefully and sympathetically.

The Chargé d’Affaires ad interim is informed that in view of the fact that the negotiations looking toward a trade agreement between [Page 764] the United States and Switzerland are still in progress and give promise of being brought to a successful conclusion in the near future, it is expected that the President, at a very early date, will instruct the Secretary of the Treasury to continue for a specified time to apply the above-mentioned duties to Swiss products.
