The Minister in Greece (MacVeagh) to the Secretary of State
[Received August 14.]
Sir: In reference to the Department’s telegram No. 42 of July 6, 3 p.m. and my reply No. 70 of July 11, 10 a.m., I have the pleasure to report that during my absence from Athens on a leave of short duration, the matter in question was handled by Mr. Gade, Secretary of Legation, acting as Chargé d’Affaires a. i. He requested and obtained [Page 512] a personal interview with the Foreign Minister, as suggested in the Department’s telegram, and secured the postponement desired without the necessity of invoking the serious view which the American Government would take of any arbitrary action by the Greek Government at this time.
Respectfully yours,
