The Minister in Greece (MacVeagh) to the Secretary of State
[Received April 25—3:50 p.m.]
57. My 56, April 24, 11 a.m. For your information it appears that the Government made every effort to save the lives of the two Generals executed yesterday but that the control of such matters has been assumed by a group of officers whom it dares not antagonize.… The motive actuating these officers appears to be revenge for the six4 and strong support is provided by an influential group of Greek Royalist Society. Unless the Government soon regains the power to control these people there seems little to prevent a repetition of the events of 1922.
- Apparently a reference to the six chief political leaders executed November 28, 1922; see Foreign Relations, 1922, vol. ii, p. 412.↩
