The Chargé in Ethiopia (Engert) to the Secretary of State

211. My 209, December 6, 4 p.m. Have not yet heard from American mission at Dessie direct but from official version and reports from American newspapermen it appears that some 40 incendiary and explosive bombs were dropped on American mission and hospital compound of which 5 hit hospital building wrecking 2 rooms. Norwegian nurse there broke leg jumping into trench for shelter. All others including some 65 patients and American journalists on grounds had miraculous escape. Injured Norwegian nurse was brought to Addis Ababa by plane today. Unconfirmed report states one Belgian officer and one French journalist wounded and about 40 natives dead and 100 wounded.

Difficult to understand why American hospital should have been bombed as it lies outside city, is easily distinguishable by red crosses painted on roofs, had very large American flag flying and there were several ambulances with red crosses painted on tops standing near, one of which is reported to have been destroyed.

Have just learned Dessie was again bombed this morning but no details available as yet.
