The Ambassador in Italy (Long) to the Secretary of State

731. My 729, October 17, 6 p.m. When I met Mr. Suvich today he said that he could now answer the representations in mine under reference and in your 175, October 16, 6 p.m. He said that Italy would issue a communiqué on the subject tomorrow and would not move on either of these open and unprotected cities. He said that that commitment on their part would continue provided advantage was not taken of it to assemble troops and ammunition in those places. In that case they would have to change their policy.

I took the occasion to ask him whether all of my colleagues had mentioned bombing. He said, “Yes, all of them mentioned bombing and from the [apparent omission]”.
