The Secretary of State to the Chargé in the United Kingdom (Atherton)

245. Your 427, September 6, 5 p.m. As alternatives to the proposal to station an American war vessel at Aden to relay messages between that point and our Legation at Addis Ababa, please inquire whether the British authorities would be willing (1) to authorize the British Government wireless station at Aden to receive and send such messages or (2) permit the installation of a receiving and sending set at the American Consulate at Aden for that purpose. In either case it would be proposed to have the Consul at Aden act as intermediary in the transmission of messages between Aden and Washington and it would be understood that such messages would be transmitted by existing commercial radio or cables.
