The Secretary of State to the Chargé in Ethiopia (Engert)
44. Department’s 41, August 6, 6 p.m. The Department is today communicating again with the missionary organizations in the United States urging those who have not already done so to take steps looking [Page 881] to the immediate departure of all of their personnel from Ethiopia. In this connection it is desired that you urgently renew the advice to all missionaries still in Ethiopia to depart at once.
Inform Department currently by telegraph of departures, plans for departure and refusals to depart. Also report whether there are still any American Negroes in Ethiopia and if so what plans are being made by them to leave.
