49. Department’s June 26, 2 p.m. American missionaries in capital who would follow advice to depart are prepared to depart immediately. A certain number may be expected to insist on remaining out of sense of duty. Potential danger varies according to locality outside capital and I have recommended immediate evacuation some stations. British Minister conferring with Emperor, and I shall telegraph further next week. News received unofficially that Eden visit to Rome complete failure. Impossible to estimate when hostilities may begin but Italian Legation urging remaining Italians to hasten departure. British Minister has plans for Legation evacuation but I intend to remain unless [Page 878] instructed to go. My despatch 1783 recommended including two Jackson negroes in destitute group.
