50. Monday night29 British Minister informed Emperor that Eden had proposed to Mussolini rectification Somali frontier involving cession of Ethiopian territory to Italy, to be compensated by cession to Ethiopia of British port Zeila and corridor to sea, but that Mussolini had rejected. British initiative was taken without consulting Emperor. Anticipate fresh Ethiopian appeal for moral support of the United States and shall be guided by instructions already received30 in so far as possible.
