The Ambassador in Germany (Dodd) to the Secretary of State

105. For the Department of Agriculture.

“For Wheeler, Foreign Service Agriculture. Reference our cable, May 18th, also Embassy’s cable May 22nd. Import quotas assigned importers American lard for June only 17 percent basic average. Also reported Germany purchased 3,000 metric tons Hungarian lard at 45 pfennigs pound. Fettstelle does not deny this but says purchase represents year’s quota. This amount presumably established by German-Hungarian treaty April 1, 1934, and is four times the total lard imports from Hungary during past 4 years. Christy.”
