I have the honor to inform Your Excellency that under a law of the Reich of August 1st of this year the offices of President of the Reich and Chancellor of the Reich were combined, following the death of the President of the German Reich, Field Marshal Paul von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg, and that under this law I assumed my high office on August 2nd of this year.

My earnest endeavor will always be directed toward fostering and promoting the relations between our countries.

Expressing the hope that I may always count on your cooperation in this my endeavor, I beg Your Excellency to accept the assurance of my most complete esteem.

  1. The sealed letter was delivered to the Secretary of State by the German Ambassador on December 14, 1934, with the request that it be forwarded to “its high destination.”

    The reply of President Roosevelt was transmitted to the Chargé in Germany as an enclosure to instruction No. 345, January 21, 1935, for delivery to the German Chancellor (862.002 Hitler, Adolf/67).
