The Ambassador in Chile (Culbertson) to the Acting Secretary of State

105. I have just talked at the Moneda with General Vergara, Minister of War, who has been made Commander in Chief of all armed [Page 911] lorees. He said that the Government is determined to suppress the mutiny and that bombing planes and troops are now moving on Talcahuano, Valparaiso, Quintero, and Coquimbo. He expects to attack rebels today. Steps have been taken to protect oil supply of Standard Oil Company at San Antonio. I have requested consular agents at Talcahuano, Chañaral, Coquimbo, and Tocopilla to inform me promptly of any developments affecting Americans or American property. Santiago is quiet.
